THE ANALYSIS OF DECORATIVE ART OF “KOLAM” BASED ON FELDMAN’S THEORY

Abstract

This paper presents the results of the study conducted to examine specifically the art of ‘kolam’ by socialization process among Indians. The ‘kolam’ art can be defined as artwork involving hand skills that require creativity and are inherited through informal education by the Indian community. Art painting ‘kolam’ is inspired by flora, fauna, geometric and organic motives. The focus of the paper is on the use of natural elements in painting the art of ‘kolam’. This study also focuses on the value and philosophy behind the use of natural motives in painting the art of the ‘kolam’. This research uses a qualitative approach to case studies. While this study will use interdisciplinary approaches with concepts in cultural theory as the main theory, education and sociology theory. Drawing a ‘kolam’ is more closely linked to the aspects of cheerfulness, trust and its own philosophy and maintaining the identity of the Indian community in Malaysia through the informal educational process
