Abstract

This review synthesizes research on trend and trajectory analysis for political economy and Islamic leadership, focusing on the influence of Islamic leadership on political economy, comparative analysis between Islamic and other leadership forms, annual publication trends, adoption and maturity phases, thematic shifts, and key papers per phase to address fragmented understanding and developmental patterns in this interdisciplinary field. The review aimed to evaluate the influence of Islamic leadership on political economy across contexts, benchmark leadership models, identify publication trends and thematic evolutions, and analyze seminal contributions defining research phases. A literature selection encompassing qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method studies from Muslim-majority regions was conducted, applying thematic analyses. Findings reveal that Islamic leadership principles significantly shape governance, economic justice, and sustainability, often emphasizing ethical governance distinct from secular models; comparative analyses highlight the coexistence and tensions between Islamic and secular leadership within pluralistic political economies; publication trends indicate a surge post-2020 with rising themes in innovation, social finance, and sustainability, alongside declining focus on authoritarianism and traditional models; key papers delineate foundational theories and emerging applied research marking the field's maturity. These integrated insights demonstrate evolving scholarly engagement with Islamic leadership's role in political economy, underscoring the need for longitudinal and cross-contextual empirical validation. The findings inform theoretical frameworks and policy discourse on governance and economic development within Islamic contexts.
