Abstract

Graduate employability remains a critical issue in Malaysia, with many graduates struggling to secure jobs that match their qualifications. This study aims to assess the factors influencing Malaysian graduates’ marketability in the workforce, focusing on soft skills, English language proficiency, internship experience, and the alignment of university curricula with industry requirements. A quantitative research approach was employed, utilizing a structured survey to collect data from recent graduates and employers. The findings reveal that internship experience has the strongest positive impact on graduates’ marketability, highlighting the importance of practical work exposure in improving job readiness. Soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, and adaptability, also significantly enhance employability, as employers increasingly prioritize these competencies. Additionally, the alignment of university curricula with industry needs was found to be crucial in bridging the gap between education and employment, ensuring that graduates possess relevant knowledge and skills. However, English language proficiency showed a weaker influence on marketability, suggesting that while language skills remain valuable, other factors like practical experience and soft skills play a more dominant role in securing employment. This study provides important insights for universities, employers, and policymakers in improving graduate employability. The findings emphasize the need for enhanced industry collaborations, curriculum improvements, and greater emphasis on experiential learning opportunities. By addressing these areas, higher education institutions and employers can work together to equip graduates with the necessary skills and experiences to thrive in an evolving job market.
