Mapping recent trends in open science implementation: A bibliometric analysis of academic practices from 2021 to 2025

The goal of this study is to conduct a bibliometric analysis of Open Science Trends scholarly endeavors for academic and research institutions from 2021-2025, through looking at the 367 of publications published in the Web of Science Core Collection.data. Co-authorship networks, keyword co-occurrence (similarity), institutional collaboration and citations patterns were mapped using VOSviewer. Although interest in open educational resources and principles of FAIR approaches is increasing, the top-level themes are still calculated as open access, research data management/exchange workflows and citizen science. The most productive output on Spanish, German and Brazilian relatively low level of in the fragmented institutional collaboration. Strong Open Science connections identified by keyword mapping among academic libraries, data sharing and transparency. Citation analysis reveals a core set of influential published works addressing policy, stakeholder engagement, and data stewardship. The findings underscore the worldwide dialogue on openness, indicating that engagement in Open Science remains deficient in developing regions, with minimal cross-institutional collaboration. This study provides insights for the prompt involvement of librarians, researchers, and policymakers in enhancing Open Science practices focused on cooperation, infrastructure, policy frameworks, and governance. It also demonstrates the significance of VOSviewer and analogous bibliometric tools in representing the intellectual framework of research and guiding strategies for the future advancement of a more inclusive and equitable Open research system.
