ISLAM, DEMOCRACY AND SOCIALISM
Abstract
This article explores the visions of Al-Ustaz Mahmoud M Taha in relation to Islam, democracy, and socialism. Taha was a modern and reform-minded religious figure whose views were both progressive and controversial. His views ultimately led to his conviction of apostasy and subsequent execution by the Sudanese government in 1985. Taha believed that Islam has the potential to integrate democracy and socialism into a single system, something that had eluded humanity for a long time. He also believed that Islam's strength lay in its ability to balance the needs of the individual with those of the community, with a just society being one that upheld economic, political, and social equality.
